Overview of Industry Distribution of Chinese Enterprises' Investments in Latin America (2023 Estimated)
Based on public data estimates, this article presents the industry structure of Chinese enterprises' investments in Latin America, with the energy sector dominating.
Overview
Latin America is one of the important destinations for Chinese enterprises' overseas investment, and the investment fields have become increasingly diversified in recent years. According to industry estimates, energy (especially oil, natural gas, and renewable energy) remains the focus, accounting for about 40%; infrastructure (transportation, electricity, etc.) accounts for 25%; technology (internet, e-commerce, fintech) accounts for 15%; agriculture (soybeans, beef, etc.) accounts for 10%; and others (manufacturing, mining, etc.) account for 10%. Below is a brief analysis of each sector.
Energy
Energy investments are concentrated in oil and gas projects in Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, and renewable energy projects in Chile and Mexico. Chinese enterprises have built several large hydropower plants and wind farms in Latin America, such as the Belo Monte hydropower project in Brazil (invested by State Grid).
Infrastructure
Through the Belt and Road Initiative, Chinese enterprises participate in the construction of highways, railways, and ports in Latin America, such as the Chancay Port project in Peru (invested by COSCO Shipping) and the Belgrano Cargas railway renovation project in Argentina.
Technology
In recent years, Chinese internet companies have increased investments in Latin American e-commerce and fintech. For example, DiDi invested in ride-hailing platforms in Brazil, ByteDance's TikTok expanded in Mexico, and Tencent participated in the financing of Brazilian fintech Nubank.
Agriculture
Chinese agricultural investments in Latin America focus on the production and trade of soybeans, corn, and other agricultural products to meet domestic demand. COFCO has multiple soybean crushing plants and port facilities in Brazil and Argentina.
Others
This includes mining (copper, lithium) and manufacturing. Chile's lithium resources have attracted Chinese battery companies, such as CATL's involvement in Chilean lithium projects. In manufacturing, Chinese auto brands like BYD have established factories in Brazil.
