Annual Trend Analysis of China's Outward FDI Flows

In recent years, Chinese enterprises have accelerated their global expansion, with outward foreign direct investment (ODI) flows serving as a key indicator of internationalization depth. According to data from China's Ministry of Commerce and UNCTAD, China's ODI flows showed a fluctuating upward trend from 2019 to 2023.

  • 2019: Flows were $136.9 billion, with growth slowing due to global trade frictions.
  • 2020: Despite the pandemic, flows rose counter-trend to $153.7 billion (+12.3%), driven by overseas M&A in healthcare and technology.
  • 2021: Reached a five-year peak of $178.8 billion (+16.3%), with new energy and digital economy as investment hotspots.
  • 2022: Fell to $163.1 billion (-8.8%), as global inflation and geopolitical risks prompted more cautious investment.
  • 2023: Rebounded to $177.3 billion (+8.7%), with notable growth in investments along the Belt and Road Initiative countries.

Overall, China's ODI grew approximately 29.5% over the five years, with an increase of $40.4 billion from 2019 to 2023. The investment structure has shifted from traditional resources to high-end manufacturing and technology services, reflecting deepening global integration of Chinese enterprises.
