2024 Southeast Asia Digital Payment Methods Share: E-Wallets Dominate
Based on industry reports, e-wallets account for about 52% of Southeast Asia's digital payment market in 2024, followed by bank transfers (20%), credit cards (15%), and cash & others (13%).
Payment Structure Overview
The Southeast Asian digital payment market in 2024 presents a diversified landscape, but e-wallets have established dominance. According to Worldpay's 2024 Global Payments Report estimates, e-wallet transaction value accounts for 52% of total digital payment transaction value in the region, far exceeding other methods. Bank transfers rank second with a 20% share, credit and debit cards together account for 15%, while traditional methods such as cash and cash on delivery still hold 13%.
Rise of E-Wallets
The popularity of e-wallets is driven by high smartphone penetration and internet access in Southeast Asia. Major players like GrabPay, GoPay, and TrueMoney capture the majority share, while Alipay and WeChat Pay also gain some market through cross-border scenarios. E-wallets are particularly prominent in small-ticket, high-frequency transactions such as food delivery, ride-hailing, and online shopping.
Bank Transfers and Credit Cards
Bank transfers (including online and mobile banking) remain the preferred method for larger transactions or subscription payments, especially in Thailand and Vietnam. Credit cards have a higher share in mature markets like Malaysia and Singapore, but overall growth is slowing due to limited issuance.
Residual Role of Cash
Despite rapid digital adoption, cash remains significant in less developed regions such as Myanmar and Laos, as well as for offline small-value transactions. In cross-border e-commerce, cash on delivery still sees demand in certain countries.
Implications for Chinese Enterprises Going Global
Chinese payment service providers and e-commerce platforms should prioritize integration with local mainstream e-wallets while retaining bank transfer and credit card options to cover diverse user habits. For cash-preference regions, hybrid solutions like convenience store payments can be offered. It is important to note that regulatory differences (e.g., Indonesia's QRIS standard) require customized integration.
